If you remember, news broke in April that Lionsgate was planning to revive the Blair Witch Project franchise. An update on the project was recently shared by Production Weekly.
According to Production Weekly, Lionsgate has brought on Oliver Park to direct an upcoming film tentatively titled “Untitled Blair Witch Sequel.” The movie is expected to begin shooting in late summer or fall. Park, a British writer and director, has an impressive body of work that includes “The Offering” (2020), “Still” (2017), “Strange Events” (2015), and “A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio” (2019).
It’s worth mentioning that Haxan Films, the production company responsible for the original Blair Witch Project, is attached to the project. Although there has been no official confirmation from Lionsgate, both Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez are listed as producers. Myrick and Sánchez were the masterminds behind the acclaimed found footage movie from 1999, which they wrote and directed.
Adam Wingard’s 2016 movie, Blair Witch, didn’t set the box office on fire. However, the original movie’s directors, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, haven’t given up hope of reviving the franchise with fresh ideas. Surprisingly, though, the duo had little creative control over the follow-up films, despite having a trove of creative ideas.
Keep watching for further updates on The Blair Witch Project as we receive them.
